Leaky Faucets & Slow Drains Got You Stopped Up?

Slow Drain Tips in Carrollton

Slow drains and leaking faucets are two of the most common plumbing problems in the typical home. That’s because faucets have wear-and-tear parts that will fail eventually, and drain sludge accumulates over time, slowing, and potentially blocking, your drains. Luckily, some easy drain and leaky faucet repair steps and plumbing upkeep can solve these issues.

Common Causes of Leaky Faucets and Slow Drains

Leaking faucets in the kitchen, laundry room, or bathroom sinks can be annoying with the constant drip, drip. Also, ignoring a leaky faucet or showerhead can increase your water bill and waste more water than you might think.

Faucet leaks are often due to a damaged washer beneath the faucet handle. Corrosion can also lead to leaks around your faucet handle (pooling around the fixture, on top of the sink).

Slow drains are generally caused by a buildup of crud (technical term) that can include: bits of food, sticky grease, hair, limescale from hard water, and more.

How to Fix Slow Drains: DIY Tips

Slow drain prevention is actually the best cure for slow drains. Make sure all members of your family understand the need to keep drains clear by not allowing food, grease, and hair to go down. Use hair traps in the tub or shower drain and a trap in the kitchen as well, if possible.

Professional drain maintenance is another good step for slow drain prevention. Ideally, you should schedule a professional plumbing maintenance visit annually, for expert drain cleaning. This can prevent slow drains—and the pipe clogs or plumbing blockages that typically follow.

How to Fix Leaky Faucets: DIY Tips

Faucets come in a wide variety of designs, so your leaky faucet repair may not follow the listed steps exactly. Here are the basic steps to fix your leaky faucet:

  1. Before repairing your broken faucet, turn off the water supply, using the knobs under the sink near the wall.
  2. Take off the decorative parts of faucet handles by prying with a flat-head screwdriver. Unscrew the handle from the stem—this screw is generally visible once you remove the decorative handles.
  3. Loosen the bolt (packing nut) with a wrench. Remove the faucet stem, which may twist off or pull off. If any of these parts are cracked or damaged, they should be replaced.
  4. Remove the washer and O-ring that you can see after removing the stem. Replace the washer and O-ring with an exact copy. (Take all broken parts with you to the hardware store to get proper replacements.)
  5. Reassemble your faucet in reverse order. Turn the water supply back on and slowly turn the faucet handles to check if you still have your leak or drip.
  6. If your water leak remains, call Barbosa for professional plumbing and water leak repair.
